Lack of Demand from Auto Sector Weighs on HNS Prices

The week ended with Branded Cow hides trading $0.50/piece higher than last reported levels and all weights of Heavy Native Steer (HNS) hides trading $1/piece to $2/piece lower than last reported levels. Packer Branded Steer (BRS) hides continue to trade sideways, but the prices for lower quality, processor BRS have fallen $1/piece from last reported levels.
Several packers reported limited hide demand and trades this week whereas processors and traders reported an active week of bidding and trading. The demand for cow hides from the furniture upholstery market remains firm, which drove prices up for the popularly used hide material in this sector.
Steer hides continue to trade under pressure with footwear tanners relatively absent from the market and automotive tanners having less hide pickup orders from their customers than previously expected.
