Winter Weight Hides Squeeze Sellers’ Margins

Winter Weight Hides Squeeze Sellers’ Margins

Market sentiment was negative today when considering the weak hide demand from automotive and footwear hide tanners. Tanners in these leather sectors were interested in buying material but were firm on paying lower or steady to last traded price levels.
A trader sold regular-weight Colorado Branded Steer (CBS) hides steady to their last traded level of $20/piece. He mentioned the material was sold in the regular-weight category but will ship much heavier because of the way hides are being fleshed during the winter. The packed-on snow and manure on the hide makes fleshing more difficult. Winter weight hides will ship at higher weights which increases freight rates.
