USDA Reports Massive Increase in Wet Blue Sales to Hong Kong

Several sellers reported this week’s trading was slower than the week prior, which was the Lunar New Year holiday week. The exact volume of loads was withheld by several sellers.
Bidding activity increased yesterday with most bids steady to current market levels for steer and cow hides. However, a few sellers reported that the majority of bids for regular-weight Butt Branded Steer (BBS) hides were around $26/piece, down $1.50/piece from last reported levels. This decrease is driven by the slower demand from automotive tanners.
A few sellers reported the hide weights have begun to decrease for steer hides. A few weeks prior, some steer hides were shipping close to 80lbs, but now have come down 1 to 10 lbs./piece depending on the hide selection.
