Canada Dominates U.S. Hempseed Imports

U.S. hempseed import data is complete for 2023 and it illustrates Canada’s dominance in the segment.  Lithuanian imports have grown steadily in recent years and will likely continue to expand at less than 3 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

U.S. hempseed production has fallen off considerably since 2019 when new entrants flooded the space. Much of this activity was trials, and much of it ended in crop failure. Besides the agronomic challenges of growing and handling hempseed, seed availability was also very limited and germination rates were often below 50 percent.
