The movement of renewable diesel in the US via rail has been increasing, with most of the shipments destined for the West Coast, according to new interregional shipping data from the US Energy Information Administration. Between early 2022 and the end of 2023, renewable diesel transported by rail increased about 50% due to strong growth in renewable diesel production during that period, the agency said in its “Today in Energy” report released on April 4.
Of all the shipments of renewable diesel over the period, the EIA estimated that virtually all of it went to the West Coast, the region where most of the renewable diesel is consumed in the US. This is due to the fact that California (Low Carbon Fuel Standard), Oregon, and Washington are the only states with clean fuel programs that incentivize the use of renewable diesel.
