Cow hide prices drop; poor hide demand for leather furniture sector

Cow hide trading was active on Wednesday May 8; branded cow hides traded sideways from the last traded levels, but northern and southwestern dairy cow hides traded at $1.50 per piece lower and at $1 per piece lower than last traded levels, to $16.50 per piece and $16 per piece respectively.

The softer prices were in the sellers’ interest to move large volumes of cow hides, while buyers remained resistant to purchase new material due to their already high inventories of cured hides, according to the seller.

Regular weight butt branded steer (BBS) hides traded at $27.50 per piece, up $0.50 per piece from the day prior, but steady to traded material on May 2. The packer reported the BBS hides at $27.50 per piece irregularly over the last three weeks. The packer said the trade on May 8 was for a large volume and into Asia, but the specific volume was not stated.
