Shipping delays tie up finished leather in China; plastic pollution rages on in apparel industry

On Wednesday June 12, sellers reported moderate demand for hides, specifically from China, which encouraged sellers to hold firm on prices that were flat-to-higher to the previously-traded level. However, several market participants reported that shipping delays in China had tied up finished leather and containers at ports.

Regular weight heavy native steer (HNS) hides traded up by $1 per piece day on day at $29 per piece. The trade was for a large volume into several leather sectors, including automotive and upholstery. A seller suggested that the historically low price of HNS hides attracted buyers from leather sectors other than automotive. Typically, automotive tanners are the largest buyers of HNS hides.
