Large Chinese export hide tanners somewhat active in market

Hide demand during the week ended Friday June 21 was minimal from low- to mid-sized tanners, whereas larger tanners in the Chinese export market were more active, according to several market participants. US packers aimed to receive flat to last-traded prices, but in most cases received lower-to-flat levels.

Several tanners reported dragging leather demand from brands in the footwear, automotive and furniture leather sectors. An automotive tanner stated that projections through the remainder of 2024 were expected to show stagnant or falling demand.

Leather prices were at risk of decreases driven by the continued softening of hide prices.
