Slow hide trading activity; buyers refuse to send deposits for open contracts

A few hide sellers reported an inactive weekend for June 22-23, with little trading and bidding expect for light weight heavy native steer (HNS) hides, which traded up by $1 per piece from the last reported levels to $29 per piece. Sellers again told Fastmarkets about challenges in receiving payment for previously-purchased hides.

The HNS hides trade was for a small volume and was reported by an automotive tanner. The tanner said on Friday June 21 that paying slightly above most of the market was a non-issue due to the small volume purchased and the desire to maintain a good relationship with the supplier.

Another seller reported continued difficulty to receive deposits from buyers on previously-purchased open contracts. The sellers said the same buyer bid several dollars below the previously-agreed price for more of the same material. The seller said they passed on the bid and continued to bring the open contract to the attention of the buyer.
