Low cattle slaughter in Europe supports steady prices for hides

United Kingdom
Trading in the hide market was slow from June 27 to Thursday July 11, but prices and volumes sold stabilized, according to several market participants.

Sellers tried to be in as far-forward sold positions as possible, and the low European cattle slaughter figures helped hold prices steady from the week prior.

Chinese tanners continued to put downward pressure on prices by bidding $2-3 per piece lower, but European suppliers stood firm.

If cattle slaughter increases toward the end of the summer, suppliers may need to adjust asking prices, according to Fastmarkets analysts.

The price for UK 30-32kg ox/heifer hide was $27-29 per piece CFR Asia, while 31.0-35.5kg ox/heifer hides were €0.65-0.70 ($0.69-0.75) per kg green weights ex-works in the week ended Thursday.
