Buyer demand for low quality steer hides continues

According to several market participants, buyer demand was mostly for lower quality steer hides and higher quality cowhides driven by large footwear tanners in Asia and specific furniture upholstery tanners on Thursday July 18.

Branded steer (BRS) and Colorado branded steer (CBS) hides sold well on July 18, with little buyer resistance to keeping prices steady. Several sellers reported that interest for these selections has been firm for several weeks mostly due to historically low prices and because these are the less expensive steer hide selection. Regular weight BRS and CBS traded up by $0.50 per piece and down by $0.25 per piece from last-reported levels, respectively.

Cow hide sellers reported an increasingly growing price spread between lower quality and more premium quality hides within single cow hide markets, like for dairy cow hides.
