Bids for hides fall; luxury leather tanners at risk of closure

Buyer demand in the US hide market was mild on Wednesday July 24 with several sellers reporting bids that were down by $0.50-$3.00 per piece compared with previously-traded levels. The interest was mainly for butt branded steer hides and plump cow hides.

Most of the buyer interest was from Taiwan, South Korea and China, with a small number from Mexico. Tanners in the Hebei province in China, a popular furniture hide tanning destination, was quiet in the US hide market due to the large availability of hides from competing origins.

Fastmarkets analysts assessed several steer hide markets unchanged on Wednesday.
