Quiet start to week of September 9 following active week at ACLE

No hide trades were reported on Monday September 9, following an active week during the All-China Leather Exhibition (ACLE). Hide sellers were content with the volume of hides traded during the show but buyers were explicit with how overall leather demand remained poor and the near-term outlook was weak.

Several sources reported that footwear tanners had large inventories but would buy available cured and wet blue, summertime hides if packers sold that material at flat-to-lower prices. However, one packer said that footwear tanners refused large volumes of hide sales because they were nearing overcapacity at warehouses.

Furniture and automotive upholstery tanners were interested in larger volumes, but also resisted price increases due to the depressed leather prices in China. The low leather prices weighed on hide buyers’ ability to pay more for hides.
