US cow hides face competition from South America; firm demand for hide splits from Wuji, China

Hide traders and processors reported reduced demand for US cow hides on Tuesday September 10 due to an abundance of material offered from South America, but packers said there was better demand for their cow hide material — pollution inspections in China’s Wuji County have ended, which led to increased interest from buyers in the region and higher split prices.

Several hide sellers reported that incoming bids on Tuesday were flat to lower than last-traded prices, particularly in the case of Chinese buyers. Demand from furniture tanners was firm, but competing material from South America took some buyers away from the US hide market.
