US consumers stray away from EVs; Chinese EV makers report strong sales

Buyers interested in the US hide market were searching for hide splits and material intended for mostly furniture upholstery on Wednesday September 11.

Several Chinese hide tanners said that they are anticipating an increase in furniture leather orders in the fall, so they were in demand to buy premium quality cow hides as well as some steer selections. Buyers were not very interested in the lower-end cow hides, because the global market was flooded with lower-quality hide material with competitive pricing from South America and Australia.

Recent price increases for hide splits drove up demand for the material in the past two weeks. The market was uncertain with how long the stronger market may last, so buyers were actively looking to settle trades for available material.
