The All-China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) in Shanghai concluded on September 3 and did not bring many changes to the leather market, according to several sources. There were noticeably less overseas visitors in attendance. Several tanners in China complained about a lack of finished leather orders, as well as wet blue and wet salted stock.
The only positive news reported was the improving split market, which led to tanners to pay $1-2 more for heavier weight hides.
Buyers in the shoe and automotive sectors remained quiet, but furniture upholstery was slightly more active. The activity from furniture led to good demand for cow hides at unchanged prices from last traded levels.
The Lineapelle international leather fair in Milan, Italy, is expected to take place in the coming weeks, but many sources expect a similar outcome to the ACLE.
