Animal protein prices steady; August cattle, hog slaughter down

US animal proteins were rangebound on Thursday September 19.

August commercial cattle, hog slaughter
Commercial cattle slaughter for August was at 2.66 million head, based on the USDA’s Livestock Slaughter report released on September 19. This was down by 8.06% year on year and by 2.40% month on month.

Prices in August moved differently compared with previous years — similar to March and June — due to fewer market ready cattle and limited Saturday workdays.

Cattle slaughter for the first eight months of 2024 totaled 21.25 million head, down by 3.76% from the same period in 2023 and below the three-year average by 5.59%, or 1.26 million head, for the respective period.
