Prices for steer hides intended for Asian export market increase

Hide trading was active on Thursday September 26 to Asian hide tanners focused on the export leather market, and some sellers managed sales at flat-to-higher prices than last traded. Sales into Europe were weak during the week to Thursday, and a Spanish leather tanner was forced to file for bankruptcy due to depressed leather demand, Fastmarkets heard.

A few US packers and traders traded regular-weight heavy native steer (HNS) and butt branded steer (BBS) hides $0.50 per piece higher than last reported levels. Regular-weight heavy Texas and branded steer hides traded up $0.75 per piece from last traded levels. Branded heifer hides traded $1.00 per piece above the last reported levels.
