Hide demand increases, but weaker competitor positions weigh on price improvement

Several market participants reported an increase in bidding on Friday September 27 and a strong week of closed trades. Most credited the activity to the furniture upholstery sector, Asian, Mexican and Korean automotive sectors and mild interest from the large footwear sector of the leather market.

Hides were traded lower on Friday than last traded levels. Some sellers were forced to sell lower due to the discounted trades that competitors were accepting. Regular-weight butt branded steers, branded steers and Colorado branded steers sold $0.50 per piece, $1.25 per piece and $0.50 per piece lower than trades reported the day prior.
