Hide market grapples with shipping delays and surcharges amid US-Canada port congestion

As of Tuesday November 19, several hide market participants continued to deal with shipping disruptions due to the recent port strikes in the US and Canada.

The strikes at the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Montreal left substantial container backlogs, according to the ports’ websites. Officials at the Port of Montreal expect that congestion could take weeks to clear fully since container handling gradually resumed on November 14. Meanwhile, carriers like Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Compagnie Maritime d’Affrètement – Compagnie Générale Maritime (CMA CGM) introduced congestion surcharges to account for delays, according to the liners’ websites. The surcharges are expected to take place on November 23 for CMA CGM and November 25 for MSC.

Some US ports experienced spillover congestion due to cargo that was rerouted from Canada. Hide market sources reported increased traffic caused delays at West Coast ports and chassis shortages.
