US hide prices remain historically low amid shifting demand

The US hide market continued to navigate challenges on Thursday January 9, as reported by several market participants, with dairy cow hide bids holding steady or dipping by $0.50 per piece. Cow sellers reported reduced interest but largely managed to maintain near-steady pricing.

Branded cow hide prices held flat with trade reports but dropped for one seller, which sparked notable buyer interest. One seller noted moderate business volumes despite limiting offerings to fewer than 10 containers, signaling limited availability.

In Korea, some traditional cow hide buyers shifted to steer hides, capitalizing on historically low steer hide prices. This trend prompted speculation among sellers that steer hide prices could rise, or cow hide prices might see further decreases. Despite this activity, packer steer hides continued to struggle with low interest.
