January US soybean crush drops month on month; stocks surge by 24%: USDA

US soybean crush volumes dropped in January, as processors crushed 213 million bushels of soybeans, according to figures released by the USDA in its Monthly Fats and Oils Report on Monday March 3.

The latest figure was down by 2.3% month on month, from a record all-time high of 218 million bu in December 2024. But this was still up by close to 10% year on year and was above the 211 million bu expected by market analysts.

Though US soybean processing capacity has expanded in the last few years, market sources had expected a monthly decline in the January soybean crush due to several factors including weak margins and winter weather in the US Midwest that caused processors to throttle back production.
