Midseason Crop Update

Midseason Crop Update

The 2020 growing season is in full swing, avoiding the early season rains that set back parts of the Midwest last year.  The seed and clone landscape evolved this year with more players in both categories.  Local young plant suppliers carved out some market share from established producers, many of whom shipped a large volume of starts over the past couple of years.  More professional or historical nurseries have added hemp starts to their offerings, which has been a win for hemp producers, but created more competition for vendors.  Locally produced plants help to avoid some of the pest and disease issues – and poorly rooted clones – that were prevalent in last year’s shipments from mature hemp producing areas, particularly if sourced from a professional nursery using best practices.  Even experienced nursery operators are on some part of the learning curve.  The entire hemp sector is still learning.
