Global CBD markets are under pressure after the European Commission (EC) asserted that CBD extracts from hemp flowers aren’t valid for approval under the Novel Foods policy. A spokesperson for the EC said primary concern lies with “CBD extracted from the flowering and fruiting tops of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa)”. The European Commission has “informed the applicants of its preliminary views and invited them to provide comments”, the spokesperson added. This includes 50 applicants from a number of countries, including the US.
Czech based CBDepot submitted their application for synthetic CBD to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in November of last year. On March 31, CBDepot’s application for registering synthesized trans-CBD as a ‘Novel Food’ substance appeared as EC Mandate# M-2018-0021 on EFSA’s Register of Questions portal:
