Sustainability has not been a high-priority conversation in the development of hemp farming systems.  More of a “just get it done” approach has been required for most new producers.  The same applied to MJ as that sector developed, utilizing energy intensive practices for indoor production, and requiring power hungry HID lights and massive cooling capacity to deal with the resulting heat. Outdoor MJ production – like hemp – is labor intensive, and input intensive for many producers.  As hemp pricing has fallen, operating efficiencies are scrutinized, and producers are keen to push the envelope and achieve the right balance of energy use and product quality, in light of depressed hemp prices.
