Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
Hempseed and fiber segments are predominantly developing independently of the CBD segment. Capitalizing on other aspects of the hemp plant isn’t something that CBD operators have tackled in earnest yet. Tri-cropping is a popular concept, but is far from scaled in North America, and presents some inherent limitations. With current genetics, you can grow a grain crop and post-harvest you’re left with what’s called field residue, in other crops. Corn producers will occasionally follow the combine with a baler, baling stover, particularly in drought years when forage supply is short, and impractical to ship. Most of the time it is incorporated, helping to build soil. The prospect of capturing value after harvesting a hempseed crop is a promising glimpse at increased profitability from coproducts.
