Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
The US imported 14.4 million gallons of biodiesel during March while exporting 11.4 million gallons. March imports were 34 percent over February and one percent above March of 2020. Exports were 119 percent above February and 24 percent over March of 2020, according the US Census Bureau. Import volume is off to a slow beginning in 2021 with first quarter volume 18 percent below Q1 2020. First quarter export volume is off to a better start and 89 percent over Q1 2020 export activity.
The United States averaged 17 million gallons of imports per month during 2020 while exporting an average of 12 million gallons. 2021 imports are averaging 11.6 million gallons per month and exports are averaging 8.7 million gallons.
