JHI Closed Week at $36.79 Down From Last Week

The Jacobsen Hide Index (JHI) closed the week at $36.79, down from last Friday’s $37.19. The US hide market concluded the week on a somewhat quiet tone. Automotive tanners pushed prices upwards for Heavy Native Steers and Butt Branded Steers, but these levels are aligned with last Thursday’s reports. Bids continue to come into sellers, but the prices are still lower than current price levels.

The week’s estimated cattle slaughter was 640,000. The previous week’s kill was 638,000 and the corresponding week last year it was 519,000. Year-to-date slaughter at 12.236 million is up 5.7 percent from 2020.
