EU May Pivot on Renewable Energy Directive

The European Union is expected to take a big step forward on climate policy this week by outlining new or revised regulations within many policy areas.  If approved, the EU will be positioned to reduce carbon emissions 55 percent by 2030. The initiatives are expected to have direct impact on supply and demand for biofuels as well as feedstocks and renewable electricity.

Energy Census reports this will likely shake up the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) as a leaked draft proposes that member states may have to require suppliers to meet an unspecified reduction in carbon intensity of the fuel supplied.  This would be different from “the volume-based 26% target” that was the preferred option in an earlier version of proposals.
