The American Bakers Assoc. May Not Fully Understand the Biofuels Market

Alarmed by Rising Soybean Oil Costs, The Food Industry Met with EPA 

The American Bakers Association (ABA), which represents 85 percent of the baked goods in the US, including companies like Kroger, Albertsons, and Bimbos (owner of Sara Lee) and represent over 300 companies, recently stated their case for EPA to roll back its biofuel ambitions.

The use of fuels made from corn, soybeans and other crops is causing the price of bread, donuts, and other goods to rise.  The ABA is very concerned about the biodiesel mandate due to soybean oil being the primary feedstock used in biodiesel production.

According to the USDA, food-at-home prices are expected to increase between 2.0 and 3.0 percent in 2021.  Food-away-from-home prices are expected to rise between 3.0 and 4.0 percent.  About 90 percent of soybean oil supply is used in the domestic…
