Concern Over EU Auto Leather Demand after Russian Invasion of Ukraine

The US hide market traded sideways today, with the exception for branded steers and branded cows which were $1 higher. The material in the most demand is premium quality steers used for upholstery. An automotive hide tanner reported another week of steady volume and pricing, but there is concern revolving around how the invasion of Ukraine will impact the European auto industry. For the time being, automakers have not given tanners indication of a near-term slowdown. As for Chinese tanners in the footwear sector, there has been further resistance to pay at current price levels due to limited leather orders and minimal profitability due to leather and raw material pricing. The Chinese export footwear market slowed this week, according to wet blue sellers.
