Hemp Crops Offer Dual Use

Cannabis spp. has long been known for its proclivity as a bioaccumulator, with the ability to uptake various toxins in contaminated soils.  Most of the research into Cannabis’ ability to phytoremediate soils has focused on toxic heavy metals.

Hemp is not the only option for phytoremediation. Researchers are looking at common crops like corn and carrots to determine their value as phytoremediators.  Even though some of the key contaminants are not subsequently found in the ears of corn, hemp offers a non-food crop alternative.
