Ongoing Automotive Strike May Pressure Prices Lower For Cattle Hides

Hide offers were released yesterday which brought good volume of demand from buyers but at prices several dollars lower from last traded levels. Shoe tanners came into the market with bid levels around $4 below the last traded levels. Sellers speculate that the buyers are looking to take advantage of the uncertainty revolving around the automotive industry in the U.S. Packer, regular weighted heavy native steers traded $0.50 lower from yesterday’s price levels.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) strike is ongoing into the sixth day and market players are anticipating further upward price pressure on vehicles, but downward price pressure on cattle hides if a deal isn’t made in the near-term.
