Margin Compression Driving Lower Fat Prices

Margin Compression Driving Lower Fat Prices

There was trading done at sharply lower levels again today with UCO below 50 cts/lb on an FOB basis out the Northern and Southern California markets. Yellow grease was lower as well. Illinois UCO traded down to 49 cts/lb FOB in good volume which weighed on the yellow grease prices as well. Choice white grease traded as low as 51 cts/lb FOB Mo. River in good volume, which is in line with 55 cts/lb del US Gulf indications heard yesterday.

Six cars of tech tallow traded at 67 cts/lb Chicago today. Trading for tallow was done at 57 cts/lb into the Gulf market. Chicago BFT remains quiet in terms of trading, but sources again indicated the buyers were in looking for material at lower levels.

The losses in the market today were again tied to margin compression in the renwable diesel and biodiesel sectors. Sellers looking for alternative outlets are seeing big pushback on prices tied to the extra nearby supply in the market.
