Texas Researcher to Study Hemp for Animal Feed

Texas Researcher to Study Hemp for Animal Feed

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under USDA awarded $300,000 to Dr. Negusse Kidane, assistant professor and research scientist in the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Human Ecology at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) in Texas.

Dr. Kidane will conduct a 3-year study to assess goat performance on a diet of hemp by-product.  Goats will be fed post-extraction biomass in this project.  This will add to the paltry body of research on utilizing hemp as an animal feed.  Most of the focus in research and trials have been on hempseed grain, but post-extraction biomass is a significant opportunity for livestock feeders, and a costly liability for extractors.
