Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
Montana Renewables (MRL) is the largest SAF producer in North America and among the largest renewable diesel producers. MRL has a production capacity of 12,000 barrels per day (bpd) of renewable fuel. The yield from production is assumed to be 9,000 bpd of renewable diesel, 2,000 bpd of SAF, and 1,000 bpd of renewable naphtha.
MRL is contemplating a Q4 2024 expansion that could increase capacity to 18,000 bpd after debottlenecking. Yields would increase to 13,000 bpd of renewable diesel, 4,000 bpd SAF, and 1,500 bpd of Naphtha. MRL is also considering a “Max SAF Case”, which is an option if the expansion is approved. The Max Case scenario would increase SAF production to 16,000 bpd and would require a second reactor, which has already been procured.
