Yesterday’s commentary traced the arc of hemp flower markets, which emerged as a juggernaut in 2019, accounting for millions of pounds of product produced over tens of thousands of acres. This does not include several million tons that were destined for cannabinoid extraction. Floral hemp was the face of early hemp markets. Hundreds of pounds of product were moving overseas by private jet routinely, originating in Oregon, destined for Switzerland, primarily.
THCa has emerged not only as a disruptor in the hemp space, but also in pan-cannabis markets. Cannabis markets are dominated by products with psychoactive effects, hence the explosive nature of delta-8 THC markets and now THCa. Heavily taxed cannabis in states with legal markets have always driven consumers to the black market. The cannabis lobby will work tirelessly to bury THCa markets, which they view as an existential threat to their anemic balance sheets.
