Steer Hide Supply is Building on Increased Slaughter

Bidding activity was slow today in the US hide market due to the holidays that are being celebrated around the world this week. Sellers reported hide bids from buyers in Korea, Mexico and China. Bid prices were lower than last traded levels. Some sellers countered the bids and are waiting for buyers’ responses.
Several packers will release their offer lists tonight and most stated they will offer various steer hide selections, but a few cow hides. There is limited supply of cow hides and high demand from furniture upholstery tanners. There is limited demand for steer hides and large supply, while automotive and footwear tanners have minimal leather orders and sellers have increasing inventories from incoming cattle slaughter.
