D4 RINs are 36% of 2024 RIN Output, RD Imports surge to Record High

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported 1.73 billion gallons of renewable fuel blended within the nation’s transportation fuel pool during February, a new monthly high for February. Blending was five percent above January and 14 percent over February 2023. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) credit generation climbed six percent to 2.02 billion RINs. This was 17 percent above February 2023. Year to date domestic biomass-based diesel production accounts for 36 percent of total RIN generation, ahead of last year’s pace of 30 percent.

D6 conventional renewable fuel blending (largely ethanol) was mostly unchanged at 1.2 billion gallons. This was fractionally above January blending but nearly eight percent over February 2023 blending of 1.13 billion gallons. Some renewable diesel, biodiesel, and renewable jet blending also appears within the D6 code. These amounts are generally less material to the category compared to the ethanol volumes.
