Chinese tanners lead buyers in US hide market

Hide demand was moderate on Thursday April 25, with Chinese tanners leading the market and North American tanners showing limited buying interest.

Packers traded light weight Heavy Native Steer (HNS), Branded Heifer and Native Heifer steady to last-traded prices of $32 per piece, $18 per piece and $23 per piece respectively. Jumbo HNS hides traded $1 per piece lower at $32.50 per piece, and regular weight Branded Steer hides traded $0.50 per piece lower at $21.50 per piece.

The US Department of Agriculture reported cured hide sales to China at 393,516 pieces, which made up 68% of total US hide exports for the week ended April 18. Cured hide sales to Mexico were reported at 45,294 pieces, which made up 8% of total hide exports.
