New York moves decisively against illicit cannabis shops

The Office of Cannabis Management in New York, like many other states, is now forced to deal with an abundance of black-market cannabis. Each state’s experience with cannabis legalization is different, and New York has its own bespoke policy drawing on the experience of other states like California and Illinois.

In Oregon, hemp legalization and a burgeoning cannabinoid hemp segment allowed for marijuana production on an unprecedented scale in the state. Organized crime took advantage of the state’s policy naivete, enjoying a couple of years of easy production with the state having no means to curtail them. Existing law prevented key departments like the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC) to coordinate with local law enforcement or each other.
