US hides face increased competition from global suppliers

Please note
There will be no publication of the hide bulletin/price guide on Wednesday June 19 because because Fastmarkets’ US offices will be closed in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Increased competition from South American, Australian and European hides into the Chinese market added pressure on US sellers to move hides during the week of Monday June 17, according to several market participants.

Despite the typical demand drivers of better-quality summertime hides and historically low prices, demand for US steer and cow hides was limited due to a lack of leather orders and increased competition from other suppliers around the world.

A source told Fastmarkets that some selections of cow hides from Europe were selling into the Chinese market as low as $5 per piece.
