Small volume hide sellers require deposits to ensure shipment

Hide trading was active on Thursday June 20, but of low volume, according to several market participants.

Buyers continued to resist flat-to-higher price levels, but some packers were more aggressive on holding firm. Price decreases ranged from $0.25-2.50 per piece, and the few price increases were up by $0.50 per piece.

A hide processor reported northern branded cow hides at $5.75 per piece on June 20, which cannot cover the cost of production and freight.

US hides faced ongoing competition from foreign suppliers, which drove buyers to push for softer prices due to the abundance of hides available on the market.
