Hemp-derived cannabinoids continue to demand lawmaker’s attention

Hemp-derived cannabinoids continue to consume a substantial share of legislators’ time across the US. Lawmakers in the states of Texas, Ohio, New Jersey and Wisconsin are just a few of those actively debating in July 2024 how to manage the burgeoning demand for intoxicating hemp cannabinoids.

Banning such compounds is a natural response, one that has been considered for several years, since the emergence of delta-8 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and similar isomers.

But while banning hemp-derived cannabinoids may be tempting, this approach has proven ineffective for decades, and increases the risks to public health.

US states need to focus on the most pressing public health issues, which many market participants agree must be to prevent consumption by those who are underage, and to ensure safety testing for all cannabis-derived products.
