Buyers were actively bidding in the US hide market on Wednesday July 31 for steer and cow hides, particularly for butt branded steer (BBS) hides and several cow hide selections. Sellers reported that bid prices were “reasonable” and “within workable range” for several items. The Hebei and Shandong province in China, which are popular upholstery tanning destinations, were the most active participants in the market on July 31.
A few sellers speculated that the increased interest for BBS hides was driven by the tighter price spreads between the lower-end steer hides, such as branded steers, and the higher-end hides, which include BBS hides. Over the week leading to July 31, interest had increased from upholstery and shoe tanners for BBS hides. One seller said that there was larger availability of BBS hides than most other selections, which is common in the summer months.
