The UK hide market remained quiet during the week ended Thursday August 8, with most European companies on holiday and producers fairly well sold forward, according to market participants.

But new business was difficult to find; also, any given bids were on the lower end of Fastmarkets’ assessed price, and most buyers were not open to counteroffers.

There were many reports of large stocks of wet blue hides in China due to the abundant offers of cheap salted and wet blue hides coming from North and South America. There was little sign of any near-term improvement in demand that could support prices.

The price for UK 30-32kg ox/heifer hide was $26-28 per piece CFR Asia, while 31.0-35.5kg ox/heifer hides were €0.65-0.70 ($0.69-0.75) per kg green weights ex-works in the week ended Thursday.
