Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
The week to Friday October 25 ended with a good volume of hides sold at flat-to-higher prices compared with the week prior, driven by strong demand from furniture upholstery tanners in Asia and automotive tanners in Mexico.
A US packer reported regular-weight heavy native steer hides at $30 per piece, an increase of $1.50 per piece from the previously traded level. Another seller reported the same selection at $28.50 per piece, flat to the last traded level.
Several sellers reported high demand and low supply for heavy native dairy steer hides, which encouraged prices to rise by $1 per piece from last reported levels.
Many market participants said that interest in butt branded steer hides was strong because of the attractively low price point and the desire to buy before hide quality worsens with the approaching winter months.
