Buyer demand grows for spready hides amid tight supply

Buyer demand for spready hides, such as heavy native dairy steers and heavy native dairy cows, was strong, but available supply was tight, leading buyers to bid on alternative steer, cow and heifer material, sources told Fastmarkets on Tuesday October 29.

A US packer reported that regular-weight heavy Texas steer hides were traded at $24 per piece, up by $1 per piece from Fastmarkets’ assessment on Monday October 28 but unchanged from the packer’s previously traded price.

Another seller reported a similar price increase for heavy-branded heifer hides, which traded at $18 per piece, up by $1 per piece from the day prior but unchanged from the seller’s last traded level.

Upholstery, automotive and shoe tanners were active in the hide buying market, but shoe tanners were the most resistant to price increases, Fastmarkets heard.
