The European Parliament has voted to delay the enforcement of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) until December 2025, The European Commission said on November 14, bringing significant implications for the global leather and cattle hide markets.

Originally scheduled to take effect in December 2024, the regulation requires companies to prove that products like leather are not linked to deforestation, which has posed challenges for countries such as Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay – major exporters of hides. The delay gives these countries, as well as leather producers, more time to implement traceability systems to track hides back to their source, ensuring compliance with the regulation’s sustainability requirements.
