Cow hide prices strengthen while steer hide prices weaken

Trading in the US hide market was active on Thursday December 12. Market participants reported trades primarily on cow hides, with strong demand noted. Sources highlighted consistent buying over the past several weeks at flat price levels. Buyers are primarily in the upholstery furniture sector, while automotive tanners have been more active for January shipments. But demand for steer hides remained weak, despite recent interest from the automotive sector.

US export hide sales decreased by 23.13% to 322,313 pieces in the week to December 5 from 419,279 pieces the week prior, while shipments decreased by 21.32% to 419,078 pieces from 532,630 pieces.

Total export sales for the 2024 marketing year were 25,066,242 pieces on December 5, almost all cured hides.
